One of Nine releases “Dreadful Leap” from new album Dawn of the Iron Shadow
A doom-driven retelling of Túrin and Nienor’s fate arrives October 31
One of Nine just released a new track called “Dreadful Leap.” It’s a doom epic built around the tragic Tolkien tale of Túrin son of Húrin and Nienor, featuring Hulder as the Tear Maiden. If those names don’t ring a bell, don’t worry—this is deep lore. Like, “appendices of the appendices” level stuff. But you don’t need a PhD in Elvish to feel the weight of it.
The song is the first preview of the band’s upcoming album, Dawn of the Iron Shadow, which drops October 31 via Profound Lore Records. Based on the early sound and theme, expect grief, doom, and mythic-scale tragedy—the kind of stuff that sounds best echoing through stone halls or rain-soaked headphones.
One of Nine shared this with the release:
“The page turns, and old sorceries die. Túrin, son of Húrin, has struck dead Glaurung, the dread worm! And in such bitter triumph the doom of his house is revealed as the golden veil upon Nienor’s mind is forever lifted. Thus do we, the Nine, lift our voices in the retelling, to proffer a glimpse upon the Dawn of the Iron Shadow. ‘Dreadful Leap’ is unveiled, and its echo now resounds in every hall.”
We don’t know who half these characters are, but we’re fully on board. It's grim, it's ancient, and it feels like everything ends badly—which makes it perfect. Also, anytime a doom band references “the golden veil upon Nienor’s mind” like it’s just common knowledge, we respect the commitment.
The album’s visual identity is locked in by Ted Nasmith, the legendary Tolkien illustrator behind The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, and other lore-heavy works you pretended to read in college. Even if you’ve only watched the movies (same here), Nasmith’s artwork still slaps. His illustrations turn distant legend into something you can feel creeping into your bones—and that’s exactly what this kind of music needs.
If you don’t speak Quenya but you like your riffs soaked in shadow and destiny, DethNote Apparel is built for you.
